How is liposuction done?

A surgeon performing liposuction in Miami, also known as lipoplasty or liposculpture, will insert a tiny vacuum called a cannula through several small incision holes in order to draw out unwanted fat cells from those areas. After the fat is removed, the surgeon will stitch up the treated areas and apply a bandage or garment to help hold together the skin and contain swelling. The final result is a patient with a slimmer profile and a more attractive body contour.

What is the difference between liposuction and Smartlipo™?

Liposuction targets larger areas of fat through the use of a four to six millimeter tube to extract fat while the patient is under general anesthesia. Our surgeons perform Smartlipo™ using a one to two millimeter tube fitted with a laser, and patients need only local anesthesia, but this procedure can be used only for smaller fat deposits. Smartlipo™ also tightens the skin by encouraging collagen production, generally leaves smaller scars, and leads to a quicker recovery. At your consultation, you will be able to learn whether the size and location of your fat deposits requires the use of liposuction, or whether the new Smartlipo™ procedure is best for you.

How do I decide whether liposuction or Smartlipo™ is best for me?

Both procedures require that you follow proper diet and exercise, and that you want to target only stubborn fat deposits. Neither procedure is meant as a weight loss tool. If you have large amounts of fat that need to be removed, or fat tissue needs to be extracted from an extensive area, liposuction will be recommended over Smartlipo™. Your surgeon will be able to help you select the procedure that will give you the best results based on your unique needs.

How do I prepare for liposuction?

During your initial preoperative visit with us, our doctor will need your complete medical history, including all known allergies, current medications and all prior surgical procedures. You will also be given a blood test and a complete physical examination. Patients over the age of forty will undergo an electrocardiogram.

We will let you know all of the specific steps you'll need to take prior to undergoing liposculpture during your consultation. For more information, please read our page How to Prepare for Your Liposuction Surgery.

No. Liposuction will effectively remove deposits of fat from treated areas, but is not a cure for the formation of cellulite.

Will my fat come back after liposuction?

Our bodies produce all of their fat cells during our youth before completely halting fat cell production as we hit puberty. When we lose or gain weight, those fat cells can grow smaller or larger, but the total number of cells that we carry in our body will not change. Liposuction, however, can permanently eliminate fat cells from our body. After undergoing liposuction, you can still gain weight by increasing the size of your body's remaining fat cells. The different is that you will gain that new fat evenly over your entire body rather than experiencing another buildup of fat in one, localized area. For this reason, once people have undergone liposuction, they are more likely to have a proportionally balanced body contour.

Can liposuction be combined with any other procedures?

Occasionally, liposuction is performed in conjunction with an additional procedure, such as a facelift, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), or a lift of the thighs or buttocks. During your consultation, you and your surgeon can discuss every option available to you.
